On February 14th, history was made with the opening of the first casino in Singapore, the Resorts World Sentosa. February 14th was an auspicious day coinciding with the first day of the Lunar Year of the Tiger and Valentine’s Day. A large crowd turned up for the opening with an air of excitement .
It’s been less than three years between when they broke ground on the project to the opening day of the resort. The casino was ready for the soft opening but the entertainment attractions at the Universal Studios theme park will not be open until a later date. The other new casino that’s under construction in Singapore, the Marina Bay Sands by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, is still under construction with an estimated opening date of later this year.
The Resorts World Sentosa is ready for the estimated 13 million visitors that are expected in the first year alone, with it's sizable casino floor that stretches over 15,000 square meters and holds 530 table games and 1,3000 slot machines. Casino goers will need to play an entrance fee of S$100, which is intended by officials to dissuade problem gambling, but that has not seemed to deter people from coming to the casino.
With the recent opening of the Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore has now officially joined the ranks with Macau as an Asian gambling destination.
